Education System in Honduras
Honduras is located in Central America, and has been home to several indigenous cultures, like Maya. Honduras experiences diversified climate from tropical in the lowlands to temperate in the mountains. In the context of Education System, Honduras has a literacy rate of 83.6%. Furthermore, Honduras has bilingual and trilingual schools that consist of Spanish, English and Turkish or German as its primary languages.
The Education System in Honduras is distributed over three levels:
- Primary education
- Secondary education
- Territory Education
The duration of primary school is six years (Grade 1 through 6. Secondary education is divided in two parts the first half, the common cycle, and the second half, the diversified cycle. The common cycle covers Grades seven7 through 9. The diversified cycle covers grades 10 through 12 or 13 depending on whether students chose to study for a general secondary programme or technical/vocational secondary programme.
The Honduran National Vocational Training Institute offers vocational training to the nation’s workers. Although independent, it networks with government and the business sector in order to contribute towards growth in national productivity.
After successful completion of K-12 standard whether general or vocational/technical secondary students can apply for Undergraduate courses; study duration of undergraduate programmes is 4/5 years and bachelor's degree is awarded. The higher education institutes in Honduras also offers research programmes in many study areas.
